Lisle Township Democratic Organization

"I am not a member of any organized political party. I am a Democrat." - Will Rogers

From the Departing Chair: Thank You, LTDO!

Dear Lisle Township Democratic Organization,

Some people have been thanking me for what I’ve done as LTDO Chair. The person you should be thanking is my Wife, Eva, for letting me run and serve as your LTDO Chair. As I see it, it’s actually I who owe a whole lot of people a big thank you for helping to make this past term what I think was a pretty good one.

My deepest thanks go to all LTDO Members, current and former, for putting your faith in me two years ago and for supporting LTDO financially and as volunteers. You started this ball rolling and we depend on and appreciate your support.

Thank you, LTDO PCs; you are the heart and soul of the Organization and have given so much of yourselves for the voters in your precincts and the Township, as well as the Party. Your work has been critical to moving LTDO and the Township in a stronger Democratic direction.

Thanks to all who served on the Executive Committee; Diane, Robert, Claire, before Claire Elaine Rockney, and Theresa Sullivan; you have been instrumental in our successes.

Thanks to our LTDO Delegation that represented us on the DPDC Executive Committee; Mary Jo Mullen, Paula Garcia, Arlene Kendorski, Joe Heneghan, Claire Goldenberg, Barb O’meara, Sandy Pattison, and Paul Sjordal.

Thank you to our Team Coordinators, current and former, and so many other LTDO volunteers who have done so much for us; including Peggy Nasti, Sue Quigley, Paul Adams, Joe Henneghan, Holly Hootman, Bette Owen, Mark Spieglan, Louise Goodman, Julie Ryan, Stephanie Snowdon, Chris Patterson, Theresa Sullivan, Nancy Staszak, Cathy Corl, Lynn Trevathian, Susan Francis, Steve Brugge, Dave Reynolds, and so many others who I haven’t named but who contributed in multitudes of ways. You know who you are and we thank you too.

Thanks also to every person who had the courage to file as a candidate and run in a primary or election — at any level. You are integral to the success of the organization on multiple levels. We would be a hollow club without your civic and political engagement and we all owe you a huge debt of gratitude.

Thanks to the Democratic voters of Lisle Township; just like the candidates, without your participation we would have no reason to exist.

I would be remiss not to say thank you to the DPDC for their support under both Bob Peickert and Cynthia Borbas, along with the other Township as well. We can, I believe, make our local parties the dominant political forces in the County.

Finally a big thanks to the New Administration for taking the reins from our Administration. You face new and difficult challenges, ones that I know you have the courage to rise up to. I have no intentions of going anywhere and fully intend to work together with Diane and all of you to help with those challenges, to make the Organization better than ever and the Township bluer than ever.

Your Former Chair,
Gerry

Corona Virus Precautions for LTDO

Precautions against Covid-19 (Corona Virus) for LTDO were discussed at an ad hoc LTDO Executive-Communications meeting.

General Precautions

  • Wash your hands regularly!
  • Stay at home if you feel ill seek medical care.
  • Post signs at office and at all meeting entrances: “Please wash your hands prior to entering or use hand sanitizer”.
  • Be cognizant of people around and their health. Protect yourself by taking good care of your health and sanitization.
  • Cough and sneeze into tissues or into your elbows
  •  If you have not already obtained a flu shot, get one. This will NOT protect you against Covid-19, but “normal” flu is also dangerous and will put you at greater risk should you contract Covid-19/

These will be reevaluated each month or as needed.

Meeting and Office protocols

  • Until further notice no food will be left at the office or brought to the meetings.  We will bring anything left to the meeting tonight to be brought home. You can bring something that will be consumed but not left. Just our water machine will be left.
  • We will initiate cleaning/disinfecting protocols of all handled surfaces. They will be wiped downed twice daily – protocols will be outlined and posted for volunteers to adhere to.
  • We plan to create a Zoom account to live stream in a secured place for our various meetings to accomodate those that may need to be at home.

PC Protocols

  • PC’s should carry hand sanitizers with them.
  • Do not shake hands at the doors.
  • Do not go into the houses; stay on the stoop.
  • Encourage early voting or Vote By Mail to reduce large number on voting day.

Primary Ballots Explained

Short version for IL-6

Vote for up to 6 delegate candidates and not any more. 3 men and 3 women will be chosen so bear that in mind. If you have no personal delegate preference we suggest you vote for all 6 for your preferred candidate. IF you prefer some individuals rather than others we suggest you vote for who you prefer. This would make it more likely your preferred candidates would be elected.

Short version for IL-11

Vote for up to 5 delegate candidates and not any more. 2-3 men and 2-3 women will be chosen so bear that in mind. If you have no personal delegate preference we suggest you vote for all 5 for your preferred candidate. IF you prefer some individuals rather than others we suggest you vote for who you prefer. This would make it more likely your preferred candidates would be elected.

The first choice on your ballot during the primary from February 6 – March 17 will be voting for President. This vote determines how many delegates will go to that candidate in your district due to percentages. For example, if your candidate receives 33% of the vote then they receive 1/3 of the delegates. If a candidate does not receive 15% of the vote in that US Congressional district then they do not receive any delegates at all. Remember only the delegates actually choose the nominee. The primary chooses the delegates who will choose the nominee in July.

The second choice on your ballot will be for delegates themselves. This part decides which delegates will go to the Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee in July to represent specific candidates. Every delegate will be listed next to the last name of the presidential candidate that the delegate supports. The delegate candidate who get the most votes for each presidential candidate that qualifies will get selected bearing in mind that gender balancing requirements be met.

Lisle Township has 2 US Congressional Districts,IL- 6 and IL-11. If you live in IL-6 then you get 6 up to choices and if you live in IL-11 you get 5 choices.  This number was determined by the primary turnout in 2018. Some districts got between 3-8 delegates. Our state sends 101 regular delagates and 50 super delegates. The super delegates are party hierarchy like elected officials. This is new and due to Bernie Sanders making changes in the process last time around. If a candidate gets more than 15% and they do not have any specific delegates slated, then the Democratic Party of Illinois can slate the delegates for the candidate. Genders will be balanced per district for the slating and distribution of delegates.

You can choose all the delegate candidates for one candidate or you can choose some from a few as long as you choose the number for your district or you can choose less than the total number. If you live in IL-6 and have 6 choices then the top 3 women vote earners and the top 3 men vote earners will be chosen. So if you vote for all men or all women you are just helping that genders vote earners. You could vote for the male and female of your top 3 choices if you live in IL-6 and likely have a larger influence over who goes since it is likely that 3 campaigns will get over 15%. Each delegate candidate is required to vote for their chosen candidate, for the first round of voting. IF there is not a majority, then during the second round the delegates are allowed to potentially change votes and the super delegates are allowed to vote. It is very possible we could have a contested convention so knowing a delegates’ second choice is helpful as well.
