Help the Lisle Food Pantry

I woke up healthy thankfully this morning to a beautiful morning after a very hard rain having coffee on the porch with my puppies and a couple of my cats. Sitting here enjoying the sounds of the birds welcoming this beautiful spring day with so many things to be thankful for here in Lisle: fresh clean air, beautiful mature trees, immense variety of birds, and here are my bees to say good morning – I have a beehive here on my property thanks to Aileen Eilert who introduced me to Craig Bowes – my property is just a host for his bees. I will keep my sanity today by doing something for my community -working for my neighbors and calling my state representative and senator as well my federal representatives to implore them to ensure the working poor not get left behind and buried in all this mess like always happens. I can tell you that doing something definitely makes me feel better and I encourage you to tell others how cathartic it can be. Locally I have learned that our food pantry is busier than ever. Lisle Township runs a food pantry and I spoke with Mary Jo Mullen about what the community can do to help:

The Lisle Township Food Pantry has been operating as a ‘drive-up’ service to protect our clients and staff. We have also started to see growing numbers of clients. If you wish to help the Food Pantry, here are suggestions that will make the biggest impacton residents that are food-insecure.

  • Donate to Friends for Lisle Township (FFLT), the 501(c)3 organization that funds the purchase of food for the Pantry. A monetary donation to FFLT has the greatest impact as we are able to purchase $8 worth of food for every $1 donated through the Northern Illinois Food Bank. There is currently a GoFundMe established for FFLT, so you can make online donations at https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/donations-for-the-lisle-township-food-pantry. If you wish to donate via check, you can mail it to FFLT: 3941 Hobson Gate, Naperville, IL 60540.
  • If you prefer to make donations of food, we are always looking for the items listed below. We cannot accept refrigerated products as we need to be able to track and monitor temperatures per food handling requirements. We do continue to receive perishable products donated directly from grocery stores and have a couple of our drivers working diligently to pick up those donations. Also keep in mind we serve a very wide range of clients – from families that are housed to individuals that are homeless, this list accommodates all of our clients:
    • Canned Meats
    • Canned Fruits and Vegetables
    • Canned Soups
    • Prepackaged / Canned meals (think Chef Boyardee, chili, etc)
    • Peanut Butter
    • Rice
    • Dry Pasta
    • Laundry Detergent
    • Soap
    • Shampoo

Mary Jo also told me about the garden the Lisle Township Pantry support that Paula Garcia heads up.  If you prefer to get your hands dirty, please reach out to Paula via FaceBook at Lisle Township Food Pantry Vegetable Garden Growers Page.  If you are not on FaceBook you can reach Paula by email too: placr3@comcast.net.

From the Departing Chair: Thank You, LTDO!

Dear Lisle Township Democratic Organization,

Some people have been thanking me for what I’ve done as LTDO Chair. The person you should be thanking is my Wife, Eva, for letting me run and serve as your LTDO Chair. As I see it, it’s actually I who owe a whole lot of people a big thank you for helping to make this past term what I think was a pretty good one.

My deepest thanks go to all LTDO Members, current and former, for putting your faith in me two years ago and for supporting LTDO financially and as volunteers. You started this ball rolling and we depend on and appreciate your support.

Thank you, LTDO PCs; you are the heart and soul of the Organization and have given so much of yourselves for the voters in your precincts and the Township, as well as the Party. Your work has been critical to moving LTDO and the Township in a stronger Democratic direction.

Thanks to all who served on the Executive Committee; Diane, Robert, Claire, before Claire Elaine Rockney, and Theresa Sullivan; you have been instrumental in our successes.

Thanks to our LTDO Delegation that represented us on the DPDC Executive Committee; Mary Jo Mullen, Paula Garcia, Arlene Kendorski, Joe Heneghan, Claire Goldenberg, Barb O’meara, Sandy Pattison, and Paul Sjordal.

Thank you to our Team Coordinators, current and former, and so many other LTDO volunteers who have done so much for us; including Peggy Nasti, Sue Quigley, Paul Adams, Joe Henneghan, Holly Hootman, Bette Owen, Mark Spieglan, Louise Goodman, Julie Ryan, Stephanie Snowdon, Chris Patterson, Theresa Sullivan, Nancy Staszak, Cathy Corl, Lynn Trevathian, Susan Francis, Steve Brugge, Dave Reynolds, and so many others who I haven’t named but who contributed in multitudes of ways. You know who you are and we thank you too.

Thanks also to every person who had the courage to file as a candidate and run in a primary or election — at any level. You are integral to the success of the organization on multiple levels. We would be a hollow club without your civic and political engagement and we all owe you a huge debt of gratitude.

Thanks to the Democratic voters of Lisle Township; just like the candidates, without your participation we would have no reason to exist.

I would be remiss not to say thank you to the DPDC for their support under both Bob Peickert and Cynthia Borbas, along with the other Township as well. We can, I believe, make our local parties the dominant political forces in the County.

Finally a big thanks to the New Administration for taking the reins from our Administration. You face new and difficult challenges, ones that I know you have the courage to rise up to. I have no intentions of going anywhere and fully intend to work together with Diane and all of you to help with those challenges, to make the Organization better than ever and the Township bluer than ever.

Your Former Chair,
Gerry
